How healthy are young South Africans?

And a recent study shows us that almost half of all South African children get little or no exercise, and this puts them at high risk for illness.

Do you need a strategy to get healthy? Check out the Kid’s Health website for more information.

Let’s go to the gym

The number of overweight children has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Part of this has to do with the foods kids eat. But many of today’s kids are couch potatoes—they need to be more physically active.

Today we meet up with some active young people at the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town.

Today we get a tour of Cape Town’s Central Library. Our tour guide, Senior Librarian Kathleen Laishley, tells us that even though libraries are filled with great books, they contain so much more!

Visit the Central Library at its new location in the Old Drill Hall, on the corner of Darling and Parade Streets in the Cape Town CBD.

Story time

Sit back and relax, because it’s story time!  Today we read from a book called 92 Queens Road, by Dianne Case (Maskew Miller Longman). Bo Petersen reads Chapter One for us.

June 16, 1976

Where were you during the Soweto Uprising on June 16th, 1976?  You might not have been born yet, but even so, many historians say that the Soweto Uprising set South Africa on a new course. The protest re-awakened resistance to apartheid, but it also came at a high price for many students and their families. Freda Qanya shares her memories of that important day.

Sometimes the best way to find out about history is to talk to people who lived it. You can become an oral historian! Why not ask your grandparents to tell you about their lives and experiences? To find out more about the Soweto Uprising, click here.

Audio Commentary: Darryn’s Story

Darryn August grew up in a home where no one gave him any love or attention. He was often hungry and wasn’t looked after.  Until one day when his aunt stepped in, and helped him get on the right track.

Darryn is a peer educator at GOLD Peer Education.  To find out more about their programmes, click here.

Community Capoeira

Capoeira is a dance-martial art developed by African slaves in Brazil.  It’s extremely popular in Brazil and Angola, and is taking off across the world. Marcio Lopes has been teaching capoeira in South Africa for 9 years. Recently he decided to take Capoeira to the children of Cape Town, and it’s been a huge hit.
